A fugitive for 11 years, betrayed by social media and arrested in Tunisia

The 57-year-old Guarino had created a false profile, the carabinieri managed to trace his position

Listed by the Ministry because untraceable for 11 years, the 57-year-old Gaetano Guarino was tracked down and arrested in Tunisia by the Carabinieri of the Naples Investigation Unit with the collaboration of the Ros and the Tunisian Police. The man, originally from Casal di Principe, was considered a drug trafficking broker, disconnected from mafia-type organizations but the promoter of a criminal group that was involved in importing drugs from abroad to Italy. Thanks to a dense network of supporters distributed in different countries, he managed the transit of drugs – generally heroin – from Turkey to the province of Naples, passing through Greece.

In a provision of last April, the Attorney General at the Naples Court of Appeal enforced the sentence of 25 years in prison for international drug trafficking and money laundering. The carabinieri, also through a web patrolling activity, found a profile that the 57-year-old had created on social networks with false data and thanks to the analysis of the contacts and posts published they were able to trace his position and daily movements. Finished in handcuffs, he was taken to a Tunisian penitentiary, pending the extradition order.
