The elderly woman of Slovenian origin was ill: already at Christmas Melania Trump did not spend the holiday with her husband to be close to her mother (and was thus absent in the family photos published on her social networks).

“Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth and dignity. She was completely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson and son-in-law. We will miss her immensely and will continue to honor and appreciate her teachings,” so the ‘remembered her daughter announcing her passing on X.

Between Slovenia and the United States

Amalija and her husband Viktor Knavs, both retired, had maintained regular contact with the Trump family during their son-in-law’s presidency, often accompanying the first family on trips to Mar-a-Lago and New Jersey. The couple, CNN reports, own a house in Sevnica, a small town in central Slovenia where Melania Trump attended primary school. But since the birth of their nephew Barron Trump in 2006, they had spent most of their time in New York. In 2018 they both obtained US citizenship, through the sponsorship of their daughter: a type of practice that the Trump administration had tried to put an end to.
