Born for the Zero Spreco Campaign through the joint work of the Department of Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies of the University of Bologna and Last Minute Market
A daily tool for sustainable living: it’s the new Sprecometro app, conceived by the Waste Watcher International Observatory and presented in view of the tenth National Food Waste Prevention Day on 5 February. Developed under the scientific direction of agro-economist Andrea Segrè, downloadable and usable free of charge, it was created for the Zero Spreco Campaign through the joint work of the Department of Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies of the University of Bologna and Last Minute Market, a spin-off social enterprise academician of the Alma Mater.
The Sprecometro is used to measure and prevent food waste, alone or in a group (family, friends, work group, etc…). By punctually updating their behavior thanks to the waste diary contained in the app, the user can evaluate the progress made over time by setting reduction objectives in line with the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular target 12.3: ‘halve food waste by 2030’. The app also assigns scores for each decrease in individual waste over time and for each content viewed: video, card reading, correct answers to quizzes, allowing you to compare yourself with other users. And it allows you to activate reference groups: friends, family, school/university class, company employees, public administration, etc…. In this way it will be possible to calculate the aggregate data of economic and environmental impact to evaluate the progress of individuals, groups of friends and the total number of users: a challenge to be overcome together.
Sprecometro is also a tool for estimating the economic (in euros) and environmental (in CO2 and H2O) impact of food waste in homes, business communities and schools. In fact, the app measures the food waste of individuals and groups in grams, assessing the economic loss (euros), the carbon footprint (CO2 and km traveled by a car) and the water footprint (H20 and 0.5 l bottles of water ). Over 500 students from all over Italy, i.e. all the students of the new ecological and digital transition high schools who make their educational debut this school year, have already tested Sprecometro, which will be downloadable from 5 pm on Tuesday 31 January, freely for everyone and at no usage cost. With Sprecometro, advice, videos, good practices, recipes to eliminate food waste at home and calculate our environmental footprint every day.
