Pablo Larraín (Jackie, Spencer, NO – Days of the Rainbow, El Conde) has revealed the first two photos of Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas, in his new film about the life of the legendary and controversial opera singer, considered an icon of her time. Based on a true story, the film aims to tell the wonderful, but also tragic and tumultuous life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and reimagined during her last days in 1970s Paris. Filming will last 8 weeks, and will take place between Paris, Greece, Budapest and Milan.
the director’s words
“I am extremely excited to begin the production of Maria, which, I hope – declared the Chilean director – will introduce the extraordinary life and work of Maria Callas to audiences around the world, thanks to the exceptional screenplay of Steve Knight, at work of the cast and crew and, above all, to Angelina’s brilliant interpretation and extraordinary preparation”. The screenplay, completed before the WGA’s writers’ strike, was written by Steven Knight (Spencer, Peaky Blinders, Eastern Promises).
the production and the cast
Produced by The Apartment, a Fremantle group company, Fabula and Komplizen Film, it is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, by Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film and by Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment. Internationally, sales of the film will be handled by FilmNation Entertainment. The cast also boasts the presence of Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smith-McPhee and Valeria Golino. In the film, Jolie’s costumes are based on the original dresses worn by Callas. The production consulted associations for the defense of animal rights, including Peta, regarding the use of period fur garments worn in the film and coming from the historical archive of costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini. It was consciously decided not to use or source new fur.
