Annular solar eclipse today, Saturday 14 October 2023. This is a very particular astronomical event that can be seen in the United States, Central America, Colombia and Brazil as can be read on astrospace.it.
When an annular solar eclipse occurs
An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth while at its farthest point from Earth. In this way it appears smaller than the Sun, and does not cover it completely. In this way what is observed is a sort of ‘ring of fire’, in the regions from which it is possible to observe the totality of this type of eclipse. On October 14, the Moon’s shadow on the Sun will begin to be observed around 5.03 pm Italian time, and then continue until it becomes annular at 6.10 pm. The maximum of the eclipse will be reached at 7.59pm, after which our star will gradually return to its usual appearance.
How to observe it?
The Sun is never completely blocked by the Moon during an annular solar eclipse. Therefore it is never safe to look at it directly without adequate protection. Viewing any part of the sunlight through a camera lens, binoculars or telescope without a special solar filter attached to the front of the optics will immediately cause serious eye injury. To observe an annular solar eclipse directly with your own eyes, you must look through solar viewing goggles or a secure handheld viewer.
All those who are not in the annularity zone or in the states that will be able to follow the eclipse phenomenon, even if only partial, will still be able to see it live thanks to the live broadcasts from NASA or The Virtual Telescope Project.
