After testing the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the time has come to test another important product innovation announced by Apple during the September event: we are talking about the Apple Watch Series 8, which we have been able to thoroughly test for over a year. month. Here are all the features and our impressions.
Apple Watch: the main features
Apple Watch Series 8 seen “from the outside” is very similar to its predecessor: it is light and comfortable to wear, it is elegant and offers a wide choice of faces and bands. Water resistant up to 50 meters and dust (with IP6X certification), it has a weight that is around (depending on the model) between 32 and 50 grams and a back side made of ceramic and sapphire. We found the display to be always very bright and easy to read in direct sunlight. In terms of battery, in our tests we charged Apple Watch in the morning as soon as we woke up and we used it all day and also at night for sleep monitoring, arriving the next morning with a remaining charge that is between 10 and 20 %, after an average day of training and using many notifications and many apps. In our test, the Apple Watch recharges from completely discharged to 100% in just over an hour and five minutes (it reaches about 40% battery in half an hour). There is also a new energy saving feature capable of extending battery life by over thirty hours (useful for example if we spend the night away from home without having the charger with us or if we have to face a long flight by plane): the mode keeps activates some features (such as activity or fall tracking) while deactivating others (such as the always-on display or blood oxygen or heart rate measurements).
Apple Watch: Incident detection and impact on the environment
One of the main innovations of the Apple Watch Series 8 is the detection of accidents, and it works in a very similar way to what we have already seen on the iPhone 14 Pro. Thanks to a new motion sensor, an improved gyroscope and “trained” algorithms ” to recognize road accidents, the accident detection mode is able to understand if the person wearing the watch has been involved in an accident, and then automatically call the emergency services: Apple Watch will first ask for confirmation that we are conscious; alternatively it will call for help, also communicating the exact position in which we are by sending a notification to our emergency contacts as well. To contribute to the detection there are many data such as the speed and a possible rapid deceleration from the GPS, the detection of a sudden change in the pressure in the passenger compartment due to the activation of the airbags from the barometer while obviously the microphone can detect braking or broken glass. Even the new Apple Watches have been designed, explain by Apple, to minimize the impact on the environment: the aluminum is 100% recycled as well as the tungsten present in the motor for the vibration, the rare earths of the magnets and the gold in the plating of the boards.
Apple Watch: health and sport monitoring
Most people who use Apple Watch do it to track their health and sports activities. And it is precisely in this field that there is the greatest innovation. The first one we want to talk about works, at the moment, a little on the sly: it is the sensor for detecting body temperature. We wrote “quietly” because Apple Watch does not currently provide a menu through which you can measure your fever, which would certainly have been useful and interesting. The reason is obvious: the sensor, at least for the moment, is not used to measure fever: instead it is used above all at night, when the Apple Watch is able to measure the temperature of the wrist every 5 seconds. It is, they explain from Cupertino, an important indicator because during sleep the blood vessels dilate, increasing the blood flow towards the limbs. Precisely these surveys give the possibility, through the Health app on the iPhone, to monitor changes in one’s temperature day after day, which could offer valuable data for monitoring any illnesses. The data is also very useful for women’s health because it can provide estimates and retrospectives on ovulation, also providing a time window that allows the chances of conception to be calculated. The temperature measurement actually takes place through two sensors: one under the lower crystal – therefore in contact with the skin – one under the display, and the use of a double instrument allows to reduce false readings caused by the surrounding environment.
Among other new features, it improves the Training app, in running, for example, taking inspiration from the advice of athletes, it offers many more statistics, referring to both training and recovery. Finally there is a novelty for adventure lovers thanks to a new and improved compass app: it is possible to set a reference point in the place where we are (tent, shelter but also car, to find the car in a large car park) and using the “Retrace your steps” option, thanks to the GPS recording, it is possible to retrace the route taken, thus reducing the possibility of getting lost, perhaps in large open spaces. Obviously, all the functions introduced with the Apple Watch of the previous series remain: among these, the app for carrying out an electrocardiogram directly from the wrist, the one for monitoring the level of oxygen in the blood, notifications for irregular heartbeat, monitoring of noise level or menstrual cycle.
Apple Watch: verdict, availability and prices
Apple Watch therefore innovates in the tradition, remaining an excellent smartwatch for both health and sport monitoring and for interaction with the smartphone, adding innovative features. We therefore confirm the judgment given also in the reviews of the previous versions: despite the competition offering many valid alternatives, it is the ideal travel companion for those with an iPhone. Many models: it is possible to choose between 41 or 45 millimeter cases, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + cellular line connection, aluminum or stainless steel finish. Starting price 509 euros.
Pros and cons
- Features and operating system
- New health monitoring and incident detection features
- The battery, charged in the morning, must be recharged the following morning
- The temperature detection sensor does not currently offer an app that can tell us if we have a fever
