Australian Open, Bolelli and Vavassori beaten in the doubles final

Ebden and Bopanna win in 2 sets

Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori defeated in the men’s doubles final at the 2024 Australian Open. The two Italians were beaten by the pair formed by 36-year-old Matthew Ebden and 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna, number 2 in the draw. The Australian and the Indian won 7-6 (7-0), 7-5.

The match

Bolelli has to cancel a break point on his turn of serve, Vavassori has to do the same shortly after (2-2). The Azzurri have a chance at 5-5: Ebden cancels the break point and closes the game with an ace on the second ball. The epilogue is postponed to the tie-break which has no history. Ebden and Bopanna raise the level and do nothing wrong, 7-0 and the first set closed 7-6 in 51′. Balance reigns in the second set until 5-5. In the eleventh game, Vavassori sinks to 0-40: impossible to recover and decisive break. Ebden closes, 7-5 and game over. Bopanna, who turns 44 in March, wins the first Slam title in a very long career and from Monday with Ebden will take first place in the doubles ranking.

Bolelli: “We’ll try again”

“We didn’t win, we had two wonderful weeks in Melbourne,” says Bolelli. “We started playing together last year, I think and hope that we will have another chance to play together and win a big tournament,” she adds. “We are doing great things, I am sure that the season will be full of satisfactions for us”, echoes Vavassori.
