Bad weather, red alert in Basilicata

Calabria, Molise, Puglia and Campania are under observation. Schools closed tomorrow in Naples

Bad weather lashes Italy, particularly affecting some regions. Based on the available forecasts, the Civil Protection Department, in agreement with the regions involved, has issued a further warning of adverse weather conditions which supplements and extends the previous one. Weather phenomena, impacting on the various areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities.

The warning foresees strong to stormy winds with a prevalent southern component on Sicily, Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia from today afternoon, with storm surges along the exposed coasts. In addition, from the early hours of tomorrow, scattered to diffuse precipitation is expected, even with a strong downpour or thunderstorm, on Sicily, especially on the western and southern sectors, Basilicata and Calabria. Finally, from the early morning of tomorrow, rainfalls are expected to persist, including heavy rains or thunderstorms, on Campania and Puglia. The phenomena will be accompanied by strong showers, frequent electrical activity, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind.

On the basis of the phenomena foreseen and in progress, it was evaluated for tomorrow red alert in Basilicata. The mayor of Potenza Mario Guarente has ordered the closure of all schools of all levels tomorrow, including nursery schools, following the weather alert issued by the national and regional Civil Protection.

Orange alert on part of Calabria, in Molise, Puglia, sectors of Basilicata and Campania. Yellow alert in remaining parts of Calabria and Campania, on Lazio, Marche, parts of Molise and Puglia, Abruzzo, Sicily, Umbria, Sardinia and remaining sectors of Basilicata.

A strong storm hit Naples and throughout the central-northern part of Campania. Flooding and inconvenience to road traffic in many parts of the city, as in the case of the Riviera di Chiaia, where some stretches of road were completely flooded. An orange level weather alert is in force on Naples, the islands, the Sorrento Peninsula and the province of Caserta and thunderstorms are also expected in the afternoon. Schools closed tomorrow in Naples due to adverse weather conditions.

Effects also on public transport: the regional company Eav has communicated the stop to the circulation of trains on the Circumflegrea line between the stations of Licola and Quarto, in the Neapolitan area, and the suspension of the service of the Faito cableway, which connects the city of Castellammare di Stabia to Monte Faito, in both cases for reasons related to bad weather.

The Civil Protection has issued the notice of adverse weather conditions also on Lazio. From tomorrow onwards, from isolated to scattered precipitations, also of a reverse or thunderstorm character, on the eastern and southern sectors of the region. Yellow alert for thunderstorms on the Medio Tevere Basin, the Rieti Apennines, Aniene, the Liri Basin and Southern Coastal Basins; yellow alert for hydraulic criticality on the Liri Basin and Southern Coastal Basins.
