Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony enchants Piazza San Marco

The Slovakian maestro Juraj Valcuha conducted the latest masterpiece of the great German composer’s symphonic catalog at the head of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro La Fenice

With six minutes of applause and a full house, the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice enchanted the over 3,000 spectators who, on the evening of Saturday 8 July, attended the performance of the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. Conducted by maestro Juraj Valcuha, highly applauded for his masterful conducting, the latest masterpiece of the great German composer’s symphonic catalog saw the participation of soprano Federica Lombardi, mezzo-soprano Veronica Simeoni, tenor Michael Schade, and bass Mark S. Doss.

The concert which reached its climax in the Ode to Joy, with the superb performance of the Choir directed by Maestro Alfonso Caiani, ended with an ovation from the audience for the orchestral players, opera singers and Maestro Valcuha.

The superintendent of the Fenice Fortunato Ortombina was satisfied: “We gave a powerful work by Beethoven to an audience that greatly appreciated the performance of our Orchestra and Choir. This concert enriches the long and memorable list of great Fenice events that took place in the splendid setting of Piazza San Marco”. Among the audience were Enrico Carraro, president of Confindustria Veneto, the make-up artist Diego Della Palma, the actress Ottavia Piccolo, the writers Giovanni Montanaro and Matteo Strukul, Adele Re Rebaudengo, president of the Venice Gardens Foundation.
