Belarus, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya’s husband sentenced to 18 years in prison

The iron fist of Kiev fell once again against the internal opposition. A court sentenced Sergei Tikhanovsky, husband of opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, to 18 years in prison.

A condemnation that would be nothing more than a “revenge” of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko: this is how Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, wife of the Belarusian opponent and herself the face of the anti-Minsk front, reacted to the condemnation by a local court.

Exemplary penalties for all the opposition

In addition to Serghei Tikhanovsky, five other opponents were given severe prison sentences in the same case.

The court sentenced blogger Ihar Losik to 15 years in prison, accused of using his Telegram channel to organize actions in violation of public order, at the conclusion of the trial, which lasted 173 days, which took place behind closed doors. Along with Tikhanovsky and Losik, four other defendants, all considered by the opposition and various human rights groups as political prisoners: former presidential candidate Mikalay Statkevich, and activists Uladzimer Tsyhanovich, Artsyom Sakau and Dzmitry Papou
