Billie Eilish on coming out: “I thought it was obvious”

Billie Eilish recently came out in a cover story for the issue of Variety about the power of women. And on the evening of Saturday 2 December he spoke about it again on the red carpet of Hitmakers, the invitation-only event that the same magazine organizes to celebrate the best songs of the year, stating that he never intended to make a grand gesture.

“I didn’t think people didn’t know.”

“I actually thought something like, ‘Wasn’t that obvious?’ I never thought that people might not know. And I can’t believe it. It just makes me think, ‘Why can’t we just exist?’ I’ve been this for a long time and I just hadn’t talked about it yet. Oops.” The singer-songwriter continued: “When I saw the article I was like, ‘Oh, I think I came out today.’ Okay, cool. For me it’s exciting because I guess people didn’t know it but it’s nice that now they know: I like girls.”

Eilish had talked about it in a profile published by Variety in November: “I’ve never felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m really attracted to them.” And again: “I feel a deep connection with the women in my life, the girls in my life, the family in my life. I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also intimidated by them, by their beauty and their presence.”

Billie Eilish was awarded at the Hitmakers for song of the year in a film together with her brother Finneas thanks to What Was I Made Forincluded in the soundtrack of Barbie. On this occasion, the journalist from Variety Tiana DeNicola asked her if her relationship with women had changed after the article was published and the artist replied: “I’m still scared of them, but I think they’re beautiful!”.
