Carlo Verdone, “Four years of hell”: the dramatic memory, a very hard moment

There are many anecdotes related to his long career in which he acted and directed dozens of films. His connection with ‘the seventh art’ was born as a child as his father Mario was a university professor of film history, director of the Experimental Center of Cinematography and a film critic.

Shortly before achieving the degree in Modern Literature at the La Sapienza University of Rome, Carlo also graduated in directing from the Experimental Center of Cinematography in Rome and in the 1970s he began to produce short films.

Several times in recent years the actor has remembered his father describing him as a “rigorous” man. He rejected it at the examination of Cinema history at the University after asking him a question about the Expressionists, the very subject feared by his son. “I couldn’t make a difference, Carlo,” he told him.

Of this and much more, Verdone spoke in the interview given to Corriere della Sera with his simplicity and his sensitivity as an artist much appreciated by the public. Among the revealed background, too the dramatic memory of the untimely death of his mother Rossana.

Signora Schiavina was a high school teacher. Unfortunately she died in 1985, at the age of only 59, due to a neurodegenerative disease. On the pages of the well-known newspaper, Carlo admits that his mother played a fundamental role in making him embrace an acting career.

“If I talk about cinema, I owe it to her who has always encouraged me,” he says. The woman’s illness was an ordeal for him too who, among other things, in those years had reached the height of success: “Four years of hell: in the morning I was shooting Water and soapin the evening I had to go to her clinic, a pain “.
