“She has more original ideas in a handful of songs than some celebrated British or American bands in a whole concert.” This quote from Elvis Costelloreleased to the New York Times in 2006 after seeing her live, embodies the essence of the thought that one of the legends of world music has about Carmen Consoli.
So when in 2006 Carmen, on tour in America, recorded a sensational sold out in NY, there was also Costello in the audience to applaud her. Costello, who had already had the opportunity to appreciate the singer a few years earlier, arrived surprisingly in the hall after reading the announcement of her concert in “Time out” and at the end of the performance he went to congratulate her and her band, shortly thereafter releasing that statement. Now the rock singer Carmen Consoli and one of the myths of music, Elvis Costello, join on tour. Three unique dates which will see the two artists alternate and combine their voices and their sounds on 28 August 2023 in Rome at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone (Cavea), on 29 August 2023 in Palermo at the Teatro di Verdura, and on 31 August 2023 in Milan at the Castello Sforzesco. The live will be a journey through the stages of their extraordinary careers full of successes and metamorphoses, which will bring almost whispered intimate moments and rock roars to the stage, alternating classic songs known to the general public with surprising reinterpretations.
Similar in their idea of music, bittersweet messengers of an intelligent rock that also ranges in other sound fields, Carmen and Elvis have always been animated by a rebellious and restless spirit that moves between irony and denunciation, bringing out an inner depth in their songs and a conscious and full search for sounds. But Costello is not the first international artist to appreciate Carmen who, close to her new European tour (departing on April 19 from Brussels) is increasingly in demand and loved beyond national borders. David Byrne had already chosen her to participate in his Meltdown Festival in 2015, while with Robert Plant he shared the stage of the Lucca Summer Festival 2022, and now she is expected next July at Peter Gabriel’s Womad Festival (July 29). From Sicily to the ovations of New York, with that definition of the New York Times that describes her perfectly, “Magnificent combination between a rocker and an intellectual … a voice full of pain, compassion and strength”, Carmen is unique in the Italian music scene . She has a career studded with records (she was the first Italian artist to tread the stage of the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the only Italian to participate in Ethiopia in the celebrations for the anniversary of Bob Marley’s death, she performed as a headliner in Central Park , scored 3 sold outs in a row in New York, founded her own label, brought Arabic and French into her songs, was the first woman in the long history of the prestigious Club Tenco to win the Targa Tenco as Best Album of the year with “Elettra” and the first woman to play the role of Maestro Concertatore at the Notte della Taranta), even if no caption lists are needed to give a sense of her artistic caliber. Her songs speak for themselves. Costello, brilliant, versatile and tireless artist, is one of the greatest singers and musicians between punk and new wave. Son of art, (his father was a jazz player and his mother sold records), he has never belonged only to rock, but has always ranged also in the world of classical music and jazz.
A Grammy Award winner and two-time BRIT Award nominee, he was named one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004 by Rolling Stone. Elvis Costello and The Attractions are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Highly regarded by his colleagues, he counts hundreds of songs and famous collaborations such as those with Burt Bacharach, Chet Baker, Brian Eno and Paul McCartney.
