Cars, registrations in Europe grow by 20.7%: electric cars on the rise

The top two European manufacturers, Volkswagen and Stellantis, recorded positive results, however, at different speeds

In Europe, data on car registrations – in the EU area, EFTA and Great Britain – show an increase of 20.7% compared to the same period in 2022. According to reports The sun 24 hours, in the period January-August the increase was 17.9% at eight million 516,943 units, but the difference compared to 2019 is still important and corresponds to over two million vehicles, with a percentage gap of 21.4 %. The top two European manufacturers, Volkswagen and Stellantis, recorded positive results, however, at different speeds. The German company recorded an increase in registrations of 24.2% with a 26% market share, two points more than the previous year. For their part, the Italian-French recorded an increase of 4.3%, but lost two points of market share between 2023 and 2022 especially due to the performance of Fiat and Citroen.

The data

Renault is very close to 10% market share in Europe. Instead, the growth trend of Hyundai, Toyota, BMW and Mercedes remains more limited. Tesla continues its march, more than tripling the number of registrations in August and gaining a 2.8% market share since the beginning of the year. In Western Europe, data in hand, the electric car market is increasing. From January to August the rate of increase in full electric cars scales down and stands at +53.6% compared to the previous year, with one million and 284,920 electric cars registered against the 836,802 in the same period of 2022, with a share of market rose to 15.1% against 11.6 last year.
