The prosecutor had asked for life imprisonment. Niccolò’s father: “There is something wrong with this justice”
The judges of the Court of Assizes of Appeal in Rome confirmed the 23-year prison sentence for Rassoul Bissoultanov, the Chechen accused of beating and killing 22-year-old Niccolò Ciatti from Scandicci (Florence) in the night between 11 and 12 August 2017 out at a nightclub in Lloret de Mar in Spain. In the first instance for Bissoultanov, who is on the run, the judges had excluded the aggravating circumstances of cruelty and futile reasons. The reasons for the appeal sentence will be filed in 60 days.
The Chechen lashed out at Ciatti “with blind fury” had said the deputy attorney general Debora Landolfi and the prosecutor Erminio Amelio in their indictment asking for a life sentence for the accused.
Bissoultanov was arrested on August 12, 2017 in Spain and then released after 3 years and 10 months. After being released from prison, the Chechen left Girona and was later arrested in Germany on an international arrest warrant and subsequently extradited to Italy. In December 2021, however, the Court of Assizes of Rome released him, with a provision later canceled by the Cassation. Back in Spain last summer, after the 15-year sentence, also confirmed in the appeal, Bissoultanov has lost track of him and is still on the run.
“THIS JUSTICE DOES NOT REPRESENT US”
“Not having recognized the aggravating circumstances is not a good sign, for a boy who was killed in that way, it is not a good precedent. We we did everything for Niccolò, but unfortunately we were not able to give him the minimum of justice he deserves”, said Luigi Ciatti, father of Niccolò, visibly moved after the Appeal sentence in Rome. “Evidently there is something wrong with this justice – he added – especially Spanish but also Italian, so insensitive and that does not represent us. Whoever commits certain crimes must pay. Let us not forget that the defendant, now found guilty, he is free because he fled, and no one is looking for him, he continues his life while he took it from Niccolò. We go on, but we realize that there is no earthly justice that can help us overcome what happened. Now we are waiting to reach our Niccolò” , he concluded between tears.
