THE DEBUT AS A DIRECTOR

At the cinema with his first film as director entitled The last time we were childrenbased on the novel of the same name by Fabio Bartolomei: “I was struck by the simplicity of this story, which is fictional but immersed in a more than real situation, even a tragic one.”, explains Bisio. Rome, summer 1943. Four children play war while the bombs of real war explode around them. Between them “the greatest friendship in the world” is born, impervious to the divisions of history. “Having children as protagonists allowed us, both the novelist and the screenwriter and me, who then shot it, not to be ideological and not to be themed, this is not the purpose of the film, it is an adventure of these three children”.

FROM DERBY TO MEDITERRANEAN

In the forty minute chat there is all Claudio Bisio: from the beginning at the Derby to Zelig (“We talked about the place and then everything was born from there”). At the Teatro Elfo in Milan where Salvatores chose him for Shakespeare’s musical version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Until the international success with ‘Mediterraneo’ which won the Oscar: “That was a strong, strong, strong emotion”. “Gabriele didn’t immediately realize he had won. He told me afterwards that, superstitiously, he also thought it would never happen but, in case, he was ready to hear “Mediterranean” possibly… “” instead the practice is that the title of the film and Sylvester Stallone are not said – who was appointed to read the winner that year – he said “The winner is Italy’ with his pronunciation and in the images you can see that Gabriele didn’t understand and didn’t get up immediately”. And then the cinematographic career, the artistic union with Elio the tense stories and the Gialappa’s and many other memories. And also a preview: “Next year it will be 15 years since the release of “Benvenuti al sud” and with Alessandro Siani we are thinking about a third chapter. We don’t even know if we have already told everything between North and South, there is no script yet. We’re telling it to each other”. But there will also be space for the personal sphere, from childhood to school. And when asked if she could go back in time what emotion would she like to relive, his answer was: “When my first daughter was born. My wife insisted and she wanted to have a home birth, with an association of midwives, all well looked after, but at home. And I was there. So the effort and joy of seeing life being born. This is an unforgettable thing, even for the second child, but the first time it stays there like that”.
