Climate inflation, prices of goods and services: +3.2% due to heat and extreme events

“Climate change impacts resources, agriculture, infrastructure and energy production, leading to an increase in overhead costs which in turn affects the prices of goods and services offered to the public”, states the consumer association

There is no good news for Italian consumers. In fact, there is a new rise in food commodities caused by extreme weather events. “Climate change and extreme heat have direct effects on retail prices and impact on consumers’ pockets, resulting in a sting, just for food purchases, of up to 4.7 billion euros a year”, states the consumers’ association. And again: “Climate change has an impact on resources, agriculture, infrastructure and energy production, leading to an increase in general costs which in turn affects the prices of goods and services offered to the public – explains Consumerismo – For example , the cost of an agricultural commodity increases due to a lower availability of production due to negative climate change, as has been happening for many months for many types of vegetables or fruit”. Price increase

Even the prices of some essential services “such as transport, water, gas and electricity supplies are strongly subject to extreme events. In the food sector alone – the association’s scholars continue – climate change affects up to +3.2% of retail prices, with an increase in spending on average equal to +246 euros per year for a family with two children only for the purchase of food and drink, and an overall sting on Italians, for the same consumption, of around 4.7 billion euros per year.If we then consider the greater use of air conditioners and fans to defend against heat waves, the impact of heat on the bill – at current electricity rates – is around 110 euros per core per year, over 2. 8 billion euros considering all Italian families”.
