Coppa Italia, Atalanta-Spezia 5-2: the Nerazzurri meet Inter in the quarter-finals

Atalanta beat Spezia 5-2 in the match valid for the round of 16 of the Italian Cup. Gasperini’s Nerazzurri thus gaining access to the quarter-finals of the competition where they will face Inter for a place in the semi-finals.

THE MATCH – Gasperini for the match contains the turn-over by changing only four players compared to Salernitana’s 8-2 in the league: Zapata in the center of the trident completed by Lookman and Boga, with Hateboer and Maehle on the wings, Ederson preferred to de Roon in midfield. Gotti on the other hand changes a lot and keeps only three players on the starting grid: Nikolaou in defence, Holm on the right and Nzola in attack.

The players from Bergamo start immediately strong and in the 10th minute they break the deadlock: Scalvini’s header from a corner frees Lookman who scores them in the net with his thigh. Two minutes go by and Atalanta double their lead. In the 12th minute triangle in the area between Zapata and Lookman who crosses his right foot behind Zovko and scores twice. It seems the prologue to another goleada. In the 14th minute, however, Spezia returned to the game: Ekdal wedged themselves into the box resisting Ederson’s return and with his right foot he beat Musso for the 2-1. Gasperini’s team, however, continues to push and in the 26th minute they arrive at the trio: Maehle talks with Zapata, Hateboer cuts into the area who again beats Zovko with his left foot. In the 34th minute the poker could arrive but Zapata who beats Zovko with a soft touch, is offside and the goal is disallowed. In the 38th minute Spezia again: Joao Moutinho’s low cross, Kovalenko tames the ball and serves Verde who finds the corner from two steps away for the 3-2. In the end of the first half Lookman serves Zapata but his right foot splinters the crossbar.

In the second half, the pace slowed down a bit with Atalanta managing the match and trying to strike with counterattacks, which happened in the 72nd minute: Muriel’s through ball for Hojlund who sent off a powerful left foot that slammed first on the inside crossbar and then on the post before charging into the net to make it 4-2. Spezia doesn’t give up but still risks in the 83rd minute with Muriel but Zovko is careful. In the 85th minute Nzola tries with a difficult left foot in the running but the ball goes off on the back. Atalanta’s ‘manita’ arrives in the 91st minute: another counterattack on the Muriel-Hojlund axis, a soft touch to climb over the baby’s Zovko, the ball bounces off the post and ends up on Ampadu’s thigh who scores an own goal for the final 5-2 .
