After Queen Margrethe of Denmark officially abdicated, the new king is her eldest son, Frederik X, proclaimed sovereign by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
His wife at his side
At his side, during the ceremony, was his wife Mary Donaldson, whom the new king also kissed to the delight of the audience gathered under the balcony. The couple has four children: Christan, 18, now first in line of succession; Isabella, 16; the twins Vincent and Josephine, 13.
His studies at Harvard and his meeting with his future wife
Frederik was born in 1968 to then Princess Margaret and her French husband Henri de Monpezat. Having become heir to the throne at the age of just 3, he studied at Harvard and other universities using the pseudonym “Frederik Henriksen”, avoiding as much as possible to mention his privileged position. The sovereign and his wife Mary Donaldson (51 years old) met in a pub in Sydney, during the 2000 Olympics. She was a real estate agent. After a few years of long-distance relationship, the two married in 2004 and today have four children.
Queen of style
Mary is of bourgeois origins and for this and many other reasons, especially style (always impeccable but often also relaxed and casual, not disdaining to recycle the same looks) she is compared to her counterpart Kate Middleton. Even her origins at the geographical antipodes of Scandinavia make her a curious and unusual figure. Brilliant and socially committed, the new queen has also launched her own foundation for women, the Mary Foundation.
