Cospito, Berlusconi: “Italy should not bow to the blackmail of anarchists and mafiosi”

“Italy must not submit to any blackmail or any threat. You don’t negotiate with anyone about the rules of the rule of law” says the leader of Forza Italia. At the same time, he continues, “the protection of the health of every person, even if detained, is a sacred principle”

“Italy must not submit to any blackmail or any threat. One does not negotiate with anyone about the rules of the rule of law. The use of violent or even terrorist methods, whatever their origin, cannot lead to any other answer than with the utmost firmness. It is necessary to operate – as indeed is being done – without any negotiation and any concession outside the law”. Thus Silvio Berlusconi, in an interview with Il Giornale, comments on the intimidatory actions carried out by anarchists to ask for the release of Alfredo Cospito, detained under the 41 bis regime and on hunger strike for three months.

“Protection of health is a sacred principle”

“Depriving a human being of personal freedom – adds the former premier – is a very serious thing, but in some cases necessary. I am a guarantor, which means taking the utmost care to safeguard a possible innocent, but I am convinced that the real culprits should be punished, even severely”. “The protection of the health of every person, even if detained, is a sacred principle. The possibility of controlling the conditions of a prison and the health conditions of those who are imprisoned are among the prerogatives of parliamentarians”.

“A country’s civilization also depends on prison conditions”

“The degree of civilization of a country also depends on the condition of its prisons. 55,000 people are held in Italian prisons, when the number of beds is 50,000. In some prisons there are 12 prisoners in a cell, with only one bathroom in precarious conditions. The result is a suicide every three days in our prisons. I am ashamed to live in a country that treats human beings in this way, even if they are human beings who have made mistakes. I am truly ashamed. And my Christian culture rebels against this state of affairs. We must build new prisons in an adequate number – concludes Berlusconi – which guarantee the prisoners dignified living conditions and extend as much as possible the alternative sentences to prison”.
