CYBERSECURITY IN 2023
- They grow cyber attacks in Italy, increasingly in the sights of hacktivism. The annual report of Clusit, the Italian Association for IT security, highlights the jump in incursions which in our country are 4 times more frequent than elsewhere. Here are the major cyber crimes

THE WHEELIE
- According to the Clusit analysis, in Italy in the first six months of 2023 cyber attacks increased by 40% while in the rest of the world they stand at more moderate levels, equal to 11%. In 5 years the leap in our country has reached +300%

CYBERCRIME
- Among the types of cyber attacks, those attributable to the cybercrime aimed at extorting money especially in the financial and insurance sectors: in the first six months of 2023 there were 1,160 actions of this type in the world, equal to 84%. In Italy they are decreasing but still represent 69%

- According to the Clusit report, Italy confirms itself as a country where cyber attacks often launched from abroad are more successful: the 9.6% of global attacks they hit the mark along the Peninsula

HACKTIVISM
- In 2023, the phenomenon of hacktivism, demonstration actions of computer piracy with political purposes. In the world they grew by 8% but in Italy the leap was more evident and today they account for 30% of cyberattacks

- According to the authors of the Clusit report, the demonstration attacks that occurred in Italy are linked to the geopolitical situation, in particular the ongoing war in Ukraine like other Western countries that support Kiev

DECREASE IN SPYING
- In 2023, however, attacks attributable to espionage and the world of information decrease: the categories Espionage/Sabtoage and Information Warfare today they are worth 6% and 2% of the total respectively

- President Clusit Gabriele Faggioli highlights the “growing pressure of cyberattacks” also resulting from theacceleration towards digital in the last three years. Faggioli raises the alarm on the fragility of Italian SMEs “unprepared” to face the new frontier of online crime

THE TECHNIQUES
- Clusit then analyzes the attack techniques: in Italy over 35% were successful thanks to the use of malware which together with ransomware represents the main incursion technique used by criminals behind the screen

PHISHING IS GROWING
- Piracy actions of this type then increase phishing and social engineering: also in this case in Italy they have a greater impact than elsewhere: 14% compared to 8.6% compared to the rest of the world
