A new female cinecomic arrives
2024 will soon see the arrival of a new and invincible superheroine on the big screen. This is Madame Web, a comic book character from Marvel Comics and belonging to the Sony Spider-Man narrative universe. The protagonist of this new chapter will be Dakota Johnson in the role of the protagonist. The direction of the film was entrusted to SJ Clarkson, who has already directed “Jessica Jones” and “The Defenders” of Marvel in the past. The screenplay was written by the director himself together with Claire Parker and is based on the original story by Kerem Sanga. The film, which will be distributed by Sony itself at the beginning of 2024, in February in North America and on a date to be defined in Italy. This is the fourth film in the Spider-Man spin-off universe, which will be followed by two more: Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3.
What is known about the plot
The story is quickly told: Dakota Johnson plays the lead role of Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic who may have clairvoyant abilities, allowing her to see into the future and the interconnected spider world. From the trailer, released yesterday by Sony, we sense that she will meet a trio of young women – including Sweeney’s Julia Carpenter, who later takes on the role of Spider-Woman in the comics – to understand her past and survive the present mortal.
The cast of the film
Together with Dakota Johnson in Madame Web we find an almost all-female cast: Sydney Sweeney in the role of Julia Carpenter, Isabela Merced in the role of Anya Corazon and Celeste O’Connor in that of Matte Franklin, although they were revealed in the first official trailer only Julia and Matte’s costumes. In the cast we also find Emma Roberts in the role of Mary Parker of which not many details are yet known other than the fact that she will almost certainly be Peter Parker’s mother.
The next releases
“Madame Web” is the latest chapter in Sony’s universe of Marvel characters, following the releases of Tom Hardy’s “Venom” (2018), “Venom: Fury of Carnage” (2021) and Jared Leto’s “Morbius” (2022). Sony’s next film will be the third film in the saga linked to the character of Venom, scheduled for November 8, 2024, and “Kraven the Hunter”, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, on August 30, 2024. “Madame Web” is the first Sony’s comic adaptation features a woman in the lead role.
