Davos 2024, today the speeches of Georgieva, Lagarde and Tharman at the World Economic Forum

In addition to the leaders of the IMF and ECB and the president of Singapore, the participation of Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan is expected on the last day of the event

Fifth and final day of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Today, January 19, there will be panels ranging from forecasts on the situation in the Middle East (LIVE UPDATES) to relations between the USA and China, up to the topics of artificial intelligence and trust in science. Speeches are expected from the director of the International Monetary Fund Kristalina Georgieva, the president of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde, the president of Singapore Tharman Shanmugaratnam and the Finance Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammed Al-Jadaan.

Yesterday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog spoke about the ongoing conflict in Gaza. “Looking ahead, we certainly need to work to find new ways to have a dialogue with our neighbors. But the fundamental question after October 7 is what security guarantees there will be for Israeli citizens,” he said. Showing a photo of little Kfir Bibas – the red-haired child who has been a prisoner of Hamas for three months – the Israeli president underlined that the Jewish state is fighting “a war for the freedom of the world”. And then he said: “Israel wants to live in peace. There is a strong desire for coexistence among both Israelis and Palestinians, but terrorism must be eliminated.”

This year’s theme

The 2024 edition of the World Economic Forum focused above all on geopolitics and ongoing wars, so much so that in addition to Herzog, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke in recent days. In the climate of strong uncertainty that dominates the global scenario, this year’s theme was “Rebuilding Trust”, which is considered by the organizers to be the necessary element at the basis of all development.
