Solving Italian prison overcrowding by moving drug-addicted prisoners to dedicated structures and protected communities. This is the idea launched by Undersecretary of Justice Andrea Delmastro, in an interview with Il Messaggero. An initiative “shared” by the government, he explains, and above all by the minister Carlo Nordio, which arises from the intention “always claimed by Giorgia Meloni to achieve not only the certainty of punishment but also an offer of greater guarantees to citizens”. “I’m working on a measure that involves the third sector, those closed communities in the Muccioli style (San Patrignano ed), to build an alternative path to detention,” said Delmastro. “Italian prisons are vastly overcrowded. According to the latest data – dating back to February – compared to a regular capacity of 51,285, there are 56,319 prisoners. And of these, according to the annual report to Parliament, 30% are drug addicts”, he recalled the undersecretary, observing that “a change of perspective is needed”. “I’m filing out the details but there is total agreement. Minister Nordio agrees”. “However, it is a path to be shared with the third sector – he added -. And with the Regions that have the delegation to Health and will have to certify the cooperatives and control their management. I will open a table of dialogue with them and with the supervisory judiciary ” .
