Like every year the political-economic weekly The Economist compiled the ranking of democracies, analyzing the state of health of the governments of 167 countries of the world. Nations have as always been divided into Full Democracies, Imperfect Democracies, Hybrid Regimes and Authoritarianisms

The score given to each country by the weekly is based on five parameters: electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, political and democratic culture and civil liberties

As regards the Full democracies24 in total, the best government in the world is confirmed as the Norway, with an overall score of 9.81/10. Also confirmed New Zeland in second place, while theIceland overtook Sweden in occupying the third step of the podium. Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Ireland, the Netherlands and Taiwan follow and complete the top ten
L’Italy falls within the imperfect democraciesoccupying the 34th position global, down three places from 2021, with a score of 7.69. In fact, it turned out to be far ahead from the point of view of the electoral process and pluralism (9.58), but much less adequate from the point of view of the functioning of the government (6.79) and in the other parameters
The imperfect democracies in 2022 they were in total 48including also the Portugal (28°) the United States (30°), the Belgium (36°), the Poland (46°) and the Brazil (51st)
THE Hybrid schemes they are instead 36two more than in 2021. Among them theUkraine (87th), Hong Kong (88th), the Mexico (89th), the Morocco (95°) and the Turkey (103rd)
However, the number of authoritarianisms, 59 in total. Among them the Qatar (114th), theEgypt (131st), Russia (146th) e China (156th). Bringing up the rear of the rankingAfghanistan with a score of 0.32
Scores globally fell during 2020 and 2021 due to policies to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced governments to limit the freedom of their citizens. The effects of the pandemic still had decisive consequences in 2022 in certain countries, as in all Chinathat it only ended its zero-Covid policy in December with the consequence of the lowest score since the ranking existed (1.94/10)
They signed up five changes in the type of government, three positive and two negative. The Chilethe France and the Spain are in fact back in the full democracies category, while the Papua New Guinea and the Peru are relegated to the Hybrid Regimes
The country that recorded the loss of the most positions was the Russiawhich is placed 22 places below the 2021 figure. Among the reasons for this collapse, Putin’s attitude towards the media and the repression against those who demonstrated against the war in Ukraine
According to the Economist, the general figure of 5.29/10 represents a stagnation compared to the democratic recession process we’ve been seeing since 2016 now
