The eight new episodes – two every Friday on Sky Atlantic for 4 weeks – of the epic drama which tells for the first time from the point of view of women the struggles for power during the principality of the famous Caesar Augustus, first Roman emperor, bring to the screen one of the most interesting periods in Roman history and follow the extraordinary rise to power of Livia Drusilla, third wife of Caesar Augustus, played by Kasia Smutniak (Perfect strangers, They, Devils).

The return of Livia Drusilla

In the first season Livia Drusilla returned to Rome after ten years of exile, determined to regain everything that had been stolen from her. The second season of Dominate resumes the story with the heir of the important Claudian family now at the head of a fragmented empire and a dysfunctional dynasty, who will have to fight to preserve her marriage with Gaius and increasingly determined to ensure that he is one of her children to sit on the throne, while new and old rivals aspire to the same honors, in a world where it is impossible to know who to trust.

Kasia Smutniak leads a large international cast made up of, among others, Matthew McNulty (Misfits) in the role of Gaius, Emperor Augustus, Livia’s husband and accomplice, who will never before realize the importance of the presence and support of this incredible woman. Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black) is instead Ottavia, Gaius’ sister, a woman seeking revenge for the death of her son Marcellus, for which she holds Livia responsible; Christine Bottomley (The End of the F***ing World) is Scribonia, second wife of Gaius, mother of Julia and mortal enemy of Livia, against whom she tries to devise a revenge plan to preserve the inheritance she deserves. Ben Batt (Captain America: The First Avenger) plays the role of Agrippa, Gaius’ childhood friend and husband of his only daughter Julia, as well as general and later consul. A relationship, theirs, which however will be put at risk due to unexpected implications that will lead Agrippa to have to make difficult decisions.

Italian excellences of international importance in the technical cast, starting from the Oscar® winner Gabriella Pescucci, who designed the costumes of the series, Luca Tranchino (Prison Break) as scenography, Katia Sisto (Penny Dreadful) on make-up and Claudia Catini (Trust: The Getty Abduction) to hair design.

The series is created by Simon Burke (Fortitude, Strike Back). Executive producers are Simon Burke, Lucy Bedford, Muirinn Lane Kelly and Carmel Maloney. A Tiger Aspect Productions production, in association with EPIX Studios. Banijay Rights is the international distributor.

The second season picks up in 19 BC, when Gaius and Livia return to Rome after three years in the Eastern Provinces. After Marcello’s killing in season one, Livia has worked to repair the marriage on which all her power and ambition depend, but she will find herself facing threats old and new. Gaius and Livia are shocked to find their city in revolt and Livia’s children in open rebellion. Over the course of eleven turbulent years, sex, murder, betrayal and power struggles are expected, culminating in the murder of Drusus and Livia’s discovery of the terrible truth behind it.

Throughout the season Livia will be forced to fight harder than ever to fulfill the sacred oath she made to her father, to restore the Republic and democracy in Rome.

Livia will need all her intelligence, ambition and cunning to navigate the increasingly rough seas of Roman politics. She will have more and more blood on her hands, will fight against the corruption of her soul and will face a terrible final choice between power and revenge. Will she be able to get both?
