Enrico Letta, secretary of the Democratic Party, was a guest of Casa Italia, the Sky TG24 event – broadcast from Monday to Friday from 20.30 – hosted by Fabio Vitale and dedicated to the elections on 25 September. In the final part of the program, the leaders talk about their proposals and their recipes regarding six themes: inflation and expensive energy, taxation, work, youth and education, climate change, a topic of their choice (Letta has chosen pandemic). One minute for each theme. In six months we will see if whoever won the elections will have kept their promises. Here are Enrico Letta’s answers (SKY TG24 SPECIAL: TOWARDS THE VOTE – ALL THE NEWS ON THE ELECTIONS LIVE – ALL THE VIDEOS).

Inflation and expensive energy

“The first important measure is the issue of decoupling between energy produced with renewables and that produced with gas. The difference is dramatic, because today gas costs a lot and drags up the price of renewables. So they must be decoupled, renewables must cost what they cost and not what Russian gas costs. Alongside this there is the theme of the diversification of energy sources. We must continue in the government’s line: regasifiers on the one hand and have gas that comes from other countries than just Russia. In the long run, there is a need to invest and encourage renewables, which will be the future ”.

Tax

“Our most important recipe is that linked to cutting taxes on labor. We believe that cutting taxes on labor means making the best and most useful choice for the economy. Because cutting taxes on labor, the so-called tax wedge, means it means giving more money in paychecks to female and male workers – and today strengthening wages means giving families the opportunity to fight against inflation that has become very high – but also helping employers to create stability and reduce work black”.

Work, business and wages

“One of the main issues is that of work for young people: it is fundamental, because today young people in Italy work with fake internships, free internships. It is unbearable. Internships cannot be fake and unpaid. The main road to work. it is the apprenticeship and the job training contracts, which must be well paid. Today the too precarious labor market means that there is no stability and that young people pay terrible consequences “.

Youth and education

“We must apply the money from the NRRR, because all the children who go to school will have the possibility – thanks to that money – for example to have these one hundred thousand technologically advanced classrooms. This training theme needs these tools. I would like Erasmus for everyone to exist in upper secondary school, for it to become the rule for everyone to spend three or four months elsewhere ”.

Climate change

“The first commitment is that linked to drought, to water. Our country has waited too long and made no decisions. We are all guilty of this. And we saw this summer what the theme of drought means. So a new legislation and a new plan for the invaded: it is absolutely essential to go in this direction. The environmental issue also has a whole series of rules that are included in the European Fit for 55 plan: that plan has a series of actions that we have approved at European level and we want to apply in individual countries. The Italian right voted against those rules at the European level ”.

Last topic of choice: pandemic

“Our country needs a large investment in public health. He needs family doctors. The ceiling on the expenditure of health personnel, which has stopped in 2004, needs to be lifted. Greater investment in public health is needed. And above all we need to know that the fight against the pandemic has been a very hard test for our country and the anti-Green pass and no vax hints are unbearable hints ”.
