School, work and environment: the priorities
Enrico Letta has spread the cards with the 8 points of the Democratic Party program on his social channels in view of the elections on 25 September next. “When we talk about” democracy at risk “- explains the dem – we focus only on institutional reforms or parliamentary regulations. These are useful and necessary interventions, God forbid. But the priority reform, a cure for Italy, today is the school. Luca Serianni in his farewell lesson said it with perhaps the most beautiful words, addressed to the students of Sapienza: “You are the State to me”. And the school is where we train the Italians of tomorrow “. “Our priorities – adds Letta – are work, environment, rights, but we are the school as a people: how we grow, how we look at the world, how we live with each other. Knowing is living,
Gramsci said. And knowing is also power: as a verb and as a noun. During my years of teaching at the university, I have had the confirmation of how current those words still are “.
The program Knowing is power provides many points “that we want to implement in 5 years”, explains the secretary dem, who adds: “I know: the Democratic Party and the center left have made several mistakes including a sloppy reform and not shared with the school community. As prime minister, I had made a commitment not to cut spending on education by one euro. And I did. Looking to 2027, we will not be satisfied with not cutting, but we will have to invest “.
Here are the first 8 points published on social networks:
𝟭. 𝗔𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗶 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗹𝗶 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶. We must give them back the dignity and role they deserve, let’s not forget how they faced the DAD without adequate tools due to the digital divide. We will guarantee continuous training and bring salaries back in line with the European average in five years. It will cost between 6 and 8 billion, to be financed starting from the 75 billion of the European 2021-2027 programming, to be considered net of the funds already provided for in the NRP.
𝟮. 𝗦𝗰𝘂𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹’𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗶𝗮 𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮. Today in Italy 1 out of 10 children does not attend kindergarten, we begin to leave them behind even before teaching them to read and write, creating the first hateful inequalities in access to a suitable education system and healthy nutrition. The school, on the other hand, must accompany all parents, girls and boys, from the earliest years of life.
𝟯. 𝗦𝗰𝘂𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶 𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲. Starting from the PNRR funds already foreseen, a plan for school buildings is needed that holds together sustainability and safety – also from a health point of view, with the installation of new ventilation systems – and technological innovation.
𝟰. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶 𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗶 𝗱𝗶 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶. Home-school travel can become a considerable cost for families, especially with inflation eroding so many savings. We want to guarantee full free local public transport and school books for low- and middle-income families (according to the ISEE).
𝟱. 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗼𝗹𝗮, 𝘁𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶. Girls and boys have to live in school, not limit themselves to lessons and homework, regardless of the family they are born into. This is why we have thought of a National Fund to integrate regional funding for study trips, school trips, free time and the purchase of sports equipment and musical instruments. Activities that stimulate critical thinking and intellectual curiosity.
𝟲. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶, 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲. Today, studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are almost exclusively the prerogative of men. We want to change the guidance process in STEM subjects so as to encourage girls to also choose these addresses which are in great demand on the job market.
𝟳. 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲. We will guarantee universal and free access for girls and boys to school canteens.
𝟴. 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗼. We will guarantee the increase of tenured support teachers to support all people with disabilities in the school career.
