For the manager, a return to energy
For Flavio Cattaneo, the appointment to Enel as CEO of Enel is a return to the world of energy after his experience as CEO of Terna between 2005 and 2014. Cattaneo, who is currently executive vice president of Italo-Ntv, is born in Rho, in the Milanese hinterland, on 27 June 1963. After a degree in Architecture at the Milan Polytechnic, he obtained a specialization in Finance applied to Real Estate at Bocconi and boasts consolidated experience in the management of large industrial companies – both in private and public sector – operating in construction, communications, energy, infrastructure, transport and telecommunications.
From 1989 to 1998, Cattaneo was Chief Executive Officer of civil construction companies and Director of several companies in the real estate sector. From 1998 to 2001 he was Deputy Chairman of Aem (currently A2A) of which he oversaw the gas distribution activities as director of Triveneta Gas SpA and Seneca Gas SpA. From 1999 to 2003 he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fiera Milano (of which he edited the listing in 2001). During his management there was a strong international expansion with an increase in the presence of the company in about thirty foreign countries. From 2007 to 2011 he was Chairman of Terna Partecipacoes (of which, among other things, he manages the listing on the Bovespa). During that time, the company became the first private network operator in Brazil. From 2003 to 2005 he was the youngest Director General of RAI, the exclusive concessionaire of the public radio and television service in Italy. In that period he oversaw the merger with Rai Holding and the company had profitability and NFP performance still unmatched to date.
From 2005 to 2014 he was CEO of Terna, the company that owns the Italian electricity transmission grid and an important independent operator in Europe, where he oversaw the international expansion in South America and the Balkans, doubling the stock market values and getting the company recognized also internationally as the best Utility in Europe for Total Share Return (periods 2007-2009 and 2010-2012 Edison Electric International Award Washington DC). He has held various positions on various boards of directors: Generali Assicurazioni (independent director, from December 2014 to April 2016), Domus Italia (Chairman, from March 2015 to May 2016), Cementir Holding SpA (independent director and member of the Appointments and Remuneration Committee and Control and Risk Committee, from January 2008 to April 2015).
In December 2014, he joined the Board of Directors of Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori SpA for the first time. In February 2015, he was elected Chief Executive Officer, remaining in office until March 2016. Under his leadership, the company had a strong Crm approach ( over 90% of the revenues generated by the Crm web portal) and achieved the first balance sheet with a positive margin.
From March 2016 to July 2017, he was Chief Executive Officer of Telecom Italia SpA, the leading Italian telecommunications operator (listed on the Milan Stock Exchange), with a significant presence in Brazil. During his management, he has enhanced growth and efficiency with a major and extraordinary corporate turnaround phase. Before becoming CEO, he was already an independent director (from April 2014) and a member of the Appointments and Remuneration Committee (until March 2015). From October 2017 to December 2018 he was Chief Executive Officer of Italo – Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori SpA. From 29 April 2022 he is a Director of Assicurazioni Generali.
