It will take place at Nairobifrom 5 to 9 June, the Second Session of the Assembly of the United Nations Human Settlements Program ‘One Habitat’. TO representing Italy will be the Undersecretary for the Environment and Energy Security, Claudio Barbaro.

The Assembly, which will see the participation of numerous heads of state and government, ministers, deputy ministers and undersecretarieswill face the three planetary crises that threaten the future of the planet: climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution, placing the role of cities and the territorial dimension at the centre, to be understood both as a venue for innovation and experimentation with actions and policies for sustainability, but also as places most affected by the negative effects of global crises.

“Cities generate 80% of the world’s wealth – explains Barbaro – and represent the places where more than half of the world’s population lives, a figure that should increase to 70% by 2050, making urbanization one of the megatrends of the 21st century. The meeting in Nairobi will be an important occasion to coordinate actions at an international level on the future of urban sustainability”.

The Assembly will bring together the delegates of the Member States: 193 member countries. Also present were other specialized bodies and agencies, intergovernmental organisations, civil society, the private sector, universities and research institutes and global networks of local authorities.
