This is a historic decision for European athletics, since for the first time in the history of the European Athletics Championships the financial prizes will be awarded directly to the athletes.
The European Athletics Council met yesterday in Vilnius, Lithuaniaapproved unanimously the awarding of prizes for performances of particular technical value of the athletes who will participate in the European Athletics Championships in Rome 2024. The format and structure of the bonuses will be announced at a later date, but this is a historic decision for European athletics, as for the first time in the history of the European Athletics Championships financial prizes will be awarded directly to the athletes.
“This is a historic decision,” he said the president of European Athletics Dobromir Karamarinov – the prizes that will be awarded will further incentivize the best European athletes to compete in Rome 2024, will increase the interest of fans and the media in the competition and will add value to the event itself. “We will of course continue to invest in a stable and sustainable way in events, competitions, member federations and the development of athletics. European Athletics is now able to further increase the attractiveness of the flagship event among our competitions, but without reduce other important commitments,” Karamarinov added.

The European Athletics Council also approved the Rome 2024 “Ambassadors Program”.which will see the stars of Italian and international athletics at the forefront of the event’s promotional and marketing campaign.
President Karamarinov acknowledged that 2024 will be a year full of high-profile sporting events – with the European Football Championships and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games taking place immediately after Rome 2024 – but highlighted the growing collaboration between European Athletics, Affiliated federations, the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) and the Rome 2024 Local Organizing Committee (Fondazione EuroRoma 2024) to make the event one of the most significant sporting events of the year.
