Ferrieri Caputi first woman in Serie A, Sassuolo-Salernitana referee

Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi has been appointed to direct Sassuolo-Salernitana, scheduled for Sunday 2 October at 3 pm. Ferrieri Caputi is the first woman to referee a Serie A match.

Born in Livorno on November 20, 1990, Ferrieri Caputi, in addition to her passion for arbitration, also continued her studies. She graduated both in Political Science and International Relations at the University of Pisa and in Sociology at the University of Florence, she currently works in Bergamo in an employment law study center. In addition, she also plays the role of a university researcher.

He has always had love for the ball and he chose to pursue an referee career when he was very young. The debut on the field among the professionals comes in November 2015, when the Livorno-born is called to referee Levito-Atletico San Paolo. Even if his debut in the top flight will only take place on 2 October, Ferrieri Caputi has already had the opportunity to direct a Serie A team.

The event took place during the 2021/2022 season, when she was entrusted with the match valid for the round of 32 of the Coppa Italia Cagliari-Cittadella. Her work was judged excellent by the referee designator and thanks also to that performance, Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi quickly climbed the hierarchy of the referee class, highlighting herself until the decision to call her in Serie A. The Tuscan referee will be also the third female referee ever in the three top-5 European championships. Before her, only Bibiana Steinhaus (in the Bundesliga) and Stéphanie Frappart (in Ligue 1) directed a match.
