Fires, significant wildfires in the spring in the northern hemisphere

According to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, the episodes in Spain, Canada and Russia were particularly relevant for this time of year

During spring 2023, several regions of the world were affected by significant wildfires in the northern hemisphere, some of which surpassed record levels. The episodes in Spain, Canada and Russia were particularly relevant for this time of year. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) monitored the intensity of the fires and their resulting emissions into the atmosphere and is reporting on the current conditions before the onset of the boreal summer.

“As summer approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, variables associated with increased wildfire risk, such as high temperatures and particularly dry conditions, are expected to exacerbate. Monitoring these variables and wildfire development forests is essential to understand the causes and impacts on the atmosphere, in order to intervene appropriately,” warns Mark Parrington, Senior Scientist Cams.
