The presidency should officially go to the deputy prime minister and foreign minister, the current national coordinator of the Azzurri and currently the only candidate. The decision has already been anticipated in the past few hours: “We also needed to give our community an element of continuity, so Tajani will be elected by the council”, said Licia Ronzulli
One month after the death of its founder, Forza Italia looks ahead. The first national council of the party after the death of Silvio Berlusconi is meeting today, 15 July, at the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Rome. On the table is the assignment of the regency of the party, which should officially go to the current national coordinator, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister Antonio Tajani, currently the only candidate. The decision has already been anticipated in the past few hours: “It was also necessary to give our community an element of continuity, so tomorrow Tajani will be elected by the council”, said Licia Ronzulli, group leader of Forza Italia in the Senate yesterday. And today, upon their arrival at the summit, it was reaffirmed both by the university minister Anna Maria Bernini – who speaks of “unanimous support” for Tajani – and by the minister of the environment and energy security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, according to whom “Tajani has the characteristics and experience to guarantee an important future for Forza Italia”. The meeting, convened for the morning, should open with a video tribute in memory of Berlusconi.
Towards the first Congress without Berlusconi
The next Congress is also on the way for Forza Italia, the first without Berlusconi and the third in the 29 years of the party’s life. Tajani has assured that he will meet before the European elections in June 2024. Only then could alternatives to Tajani be put forward. This was made clear by deputy Giorgio Mulè: “We’ll see if from now on candidates within Forza Italia or from civil society figures on whom Berlusconi has always counted will mature”.
Bernini: “Berlusconi invented the centre-right”
Many party exponents dedicated a thought to Berlusconi during the council meeting. Among these the minister Bernini. “He passed on to us the love for politics and the courage to carry on our ideas; he invented the centre-right. The last communication the president made to the party was ‘I am Forza Italia’. We are Forza Italia “, said Bernini upon his arrival.
