The Ballon d’Or: “I made the effort and the mistakes necessary to be where I am today and I’m proud of it!”
“I’ve made the effort and mistakes it takes to be where I am today and I’m proud of it! I wrote my story and ours ends.” On his 35th birthday, Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema thus announced his farewell to the France shirt on Instagram. A farewell that comes after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar experienced as a spectator, missed due to a problem with the quadriceps of the right thigh accused on the eve of the World Cup.
Benzema leaves the French national team after a troubled relationship. For six years, between 2015 and 2021, the Real forward was never called up to the national team due to the “sextape case”. Benzema was involved (and then sentenced to a year’s probation) in an extortion case against his international teammate, Mathieu Valbuena, for a red light video that saw him star with his girlfriend and then ended up in the wrong hands . Benzema only returned before last year’s European Championships. In total, the current Ballon d’Or player has played 97 international matches, scoring 37 goals, France’s fifth all-time top scorer.
