Drake is the latest of the artists to become the target of the silly (and dangerous) habit of throwing objects towards the stage to hit the musicians

Rapper Drake was performing at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Friday, August 18, 2023 when a bystander threw a copy of the poetry book at him Titles Ruin Everything: A Stream Of Consciousness

Drake caught the book before he could hit it, and told the person who threw it at him, “You did well because I have good reflexes. If you had caught me in the face I would have fucked your ass”

It’s not the first time someone from the audience has thrown something on stage during a Drake concert: it had happened before, with a smartphone and an electronic cigarette

A little while ago it also happened to Cardi B, who reacted violently, which was later reported
Cardi B will not be sued for throwing the microphone (which in the meantime goes up for auction)

During a Cardi B concert at Drai’s Beachclub in Las Vegas in late July, the rapper was hit by a drink thrown by the crowd while she was singing the song Bodak Yellow
Cardi instinctively pulled the microphone forcefully towards the woman who doused her with the drink, hitting her full head. The woman who had thrown the drink at her was immediately removed from the concert location. In the photo, a frame from a video taken by a fan at the concert, tweeted from the X/updatesofcardi profile (ex Twitter)

On July 31, Cardi B received a complaint from the Las Vegas Police Department. A woman has filed a complaint about what happened, although it is not clear whether it was the woman who had thrown the drink or others involved who reported it. The complaint does not directly mention Cardi B but reports the following: “During the concert the woman was hit by an object thrown from the stage”. The rapper’s lawyers then announced “that, following the investigation, there will be no charges against Cardi”

Bebe Rexha was injured in the face during her concert on June 18 in New York. While she was singing the closing piece of the live, someone threw a smartphone on stage hitting the pop star in the face. Bebe Rexha then fell to her knees, as crew members rushed to rescue her

Singer Bebe Rexha was later rescued by medical personnel. The wound required three stitches

Among the most absurd throws, however, in first place is the one that took place at the P!nk concert in London held last June: a fan threw his mother’s ashes on stage

“Is that your mom?” P!nk asked the fan. P!nk couldn’t believe his eyes as he picked up a bag thrown on stage during his performance at the British Summer Time Festival. “I don’t know how I feel about this…” She staggered to her feet and placed the bag behind the speakers, then resumed singing, amazed, Just Like a Pill. Less shocking however than Keith Richards, who in 2007 a NME he said, “The weirdest thing I’ve tried to snort? My father,” he confessed, explaining that he snorted the ashes of his deceased parent

A much less recent stage launch is that of the legend of the chicken killed by Alice Cooper on stage at the Toronto Peace Festival in 1969

But the most famous throw is the one that underlies another legend: in 1982 Ozzy Osbourne is said to have bitten off the head of a live bat (believing it to be rubber) that a fan had thrown on stage. Rabies prophylaxis followed, of course

In 2004 in Oslo it happened to David Bowie: while performing Battle For Britain (The Letter), the White Duke was poked in the eye by a lollipop. Bowie’s ironic was: “Lucky you hit the bad one”

Mick Jagger talks about the “most exhilarating moment” he experienced during a concert referring to what happened in the Anaheim stadium in California, during the Some Girls tour in 1978. A shower of shoes began to rain on the stage, because fans had taken literally the line “I got no shoes on my feet” while Jagger sang Beast of Burden

But if veteran musicians like the Rolling Stones, the late David Bowie, Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper didn’t get upset at all, the newcomers think differently and complain a lot about it. Among the hardest hit by the launches, is poor Harry Styles

At almost every live performance by Styles there is at least one food or object throwing. From chicken nuggets to kiwis, bottled water and candy, the star has been struck by so many different things throughout her career
