The Game Awards! The moment is approaching for the award ceremony of the most representative video games of 2023, a truly interesting year for the sector: the jury has presented the titles that compete for the recognition of “Game of the Year” next month: Nintendo, with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Overall dominates the ranking, but there’s also Wonder which has a good chance of picking up prizes. The new edition of the festival is organized by journalist Geoff Keighley and will be held on December 7 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where the best video games launched on the market in the last twelve months will be celebrated. The event will offer the launch of new announcements, including trailers for games already announced and the inevitable “World Premiere” of productions never revealed before.
The best titles of the year
Six video games are competing for the most coveted prize: Alan Wake 2 (Remedy Entertainment), Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios), Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (Insomniac Games/PlayStation Studios), Resident Evil 4 Remake (Capcom), Super Mario Bros Wonder (Nintendo) and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo). Not included in the selection of the most representative titles of the year is Starfield, the science fiction epic created by Bethesda and Xbox which must be satisfied exclusively with the nomination among the best role-playing games of the year.
Nintendo dominates the ranking
Nintendo seems to have won over the jury in various areas. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, together, account for 10 of the 15 nominations obtained this year, but it is also thanks to Pikmin 4 and Fire Emblem Engage that the Kyoto house has surpassed PlayStation (13 nominations) and Xbox (10 nominations): the first, driven by Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, can also count on the games launched for PlayStation VR2 and the various adaptations for the small and big screen, while the second surprised everyone with Hi-Fi Rush, the game from Tango Gameworks that launched without warning in early 2023.
