Singer Harry Styles performed the hit As It Was in front of a celebrity audience and millions of viewers around the world before taking home the coveted album of the year award at the Grammys 2023. But the performance was panned online by fans who labeled it lackluster and someone noted that something seemed “off.” Apparently they were right as the next day one of Styles’ dancers, Dexter Da Rocha, has revealed in a TikTok video that the turntable the dancers and Styles rehearsed on for days was spinning the wrong way around when they rehearsed.

What went wrong during the performance?

“Yoann Bourgeois and his partner Kerem came up with this beautiful choreography on a moving turntable, there were 12 of us and we rehearsed for ten days…Harry did a great job integrating and made an amazing, changeable and fantastic artistic thing” he began Da Rocha adds that rehearsing took place on the turntable spinning counterclockwise. ‘It was unlike anything most of us have ever done before. It was frustrating and it was hard to create those patterns as something moved and have all the spatial awareness and working with people you’ve never met before, like it’s a crazy challenge,” added Da Rocha. But on Grammy night when the show starts, the turntable starts going in the wrong directionas revealed by the dancer, and thus the group had to adapt.

Technical error

They tried to “get the technician’s attention,” but it was a live program and “they couldn’t scream,” explained Da Rocha, so the technician did not hear them. “It feels like a treadmill, but because it’s circular, it pulls in different directions and it’s a very unusual kind of balance,” he added. The dance crew tried to adjust and luckily they still had a good performance, but the unexpected change obviously created some imperfection. Da Rocha also praised Harry Styles, saying that he “tried his best to be able to walk and reverse everything while he sang and reverse his entire duet, which was incredible.”

Harry Styles pro

“The news didn’t know what was going on, so they called it lethargic or boring or whatever, but we were just trying to stay put,” Da Rocha said. “Unfortunately the world didn’t get to see the beautiful work of Yoann Bourgeois or all of our dancers work and the beautiful work of Harry, but he won Album of the Year, which is incredible, and we all have a story to tell. Was still an amazing experience. He is so nice and funny and hard working and made the rehearsal process so beautiful,” the dancer said. Another of Styles’ dancers, Brandon Mathis, also hinted at the difficulties in his Instagram post, though he praised Styles as “a real rock starand “a down-to-earth human being who truly cares about what he’s doing and who he’s doing it with, and that matters so much.”
