The International Criminal Court in The Hague has issued an arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin for illegal deportation of children. The court finds that the Russian president is “responsible for the war crime of illegal deportation of children and their illegal transfer of children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia”. In addition to Putin, another arrest warrant has been issued against Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, commissioner for children’s rights at the Kremlin. The crimes were allegedly committed in the occupied territory of Ukraine starting at least February 24, 2022. (ALL RUSSIA UKRAINE WAR NEWS LIVE). Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, Kiev estimates that more than 16,000 children have been forcibly transferred to Russia or to occupied areas.
Moscow: Court decisions have no meaning
The response from the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was immediate. “The decisions of the International Criminal Court have no meaning for our country, not even from a legal point of view”.
Medvedev: arrest warrant against Putin is toilet paper
“The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin. There is no need to explain where this document should be used.” The deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, wrote on Twitter, adding a toilet paper emoji.
Kiev: arrest warrant for Putin historic decision
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andrij Kostin commented on Twitter on the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I am personally grateful to ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan for this historic decision. We continue close cooperation with ICC in cases of forced deportation of Ukrainian children. There are over 40 volumes of files, more than 1000 pages of evidence already shared with the Court ” the prosecutor wrote on Twitter.
Kuleba on Putin: Justice is on the move
“The wheels of justice are turning: I applaud the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova for the forced transfer of Ukrainian children. International criminals will be held accountable for theft of children and other crimes international”: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter.
