Harold George Bellafanti Jr was born on March 1, 1927 in the Harlem neighborhood of New York to Jamaican parents. He began his singing career in the early 1950s and quickly gained wide notoriety by interpreting songs inspired by calypso, a Caribbean musical style that originated in Trinidad and Tobago. His debut album titled simply ‘Calypso’ was a huge success both in the US and in Europe.
Engaged in civil rights battles and humanitarian activities, in 1987 he was appointed UNICEF ambassador.
