We left her in a blizzard, staring at the Gordon Ford Show billboard. We find her even more determined to make her dream come true: to become a successful comedian. Today, 14 April 2023, the fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel). If you don’t know who Miriam “Midge” Maisel is, this is the right time to recover one of the most popular TV series of recent years. If you’re already a fan, a refresher before diving back into the world of stand-up comedy doesn’t hurt. Either way, here are a few things to know before you watch the highly anticipated final season of the Amy Sherman-Palladino series.
Who is Miriam “Midge” Maisel
The protagonist of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is Miriam Maisel, known as Midge. She comes from a wealthy practicing Jewish family, she is a housewife, she lives with her husband and two children on the Upper West Side of New York. When her marriage falls apart, she discovers a new passion: cabaret. On stage, microphone in hand, she understands that there is life beyond family. So she decides to follow her talent and become a famous comedian. We are at the end of the Fifties: while everyone would like only to be a wife and mother, Midge – with her cutting jokes, brilliant humor and battle cry “Boobs out” before shows – tries to make her way in a world almost exclusively male. But it is not easy. Alongside her, among others, are her agent Susie Myerson and colleague Lenny Bruce. Over the seasons – between ups and downs, laughter and reflections – Midge goes in search of success by discovering new versions of herself but remaining tied to her origins.
Midge Maisel’s looks
It wasn’t just Midge’s sharp tongue that captured the hearts of viewers, but also her wardrobe. It doesn’t matter whether he’s on stage or on the street, he wears elegant and colorful, bon-ton and super chic clothes. From suits to hats, from coats to accessories: she is always impeccable and sophisticated. Behind her looks, with attention to every detail, is the work of the award-winning Donna Zakowska. In the book Madly Marvelous: The Costumes of the Marvelous Mrs Maisel, the costume designer said: “I used color to represent her emotional landscape and emphasize the moments when she needed to be particularly comical. I started referring to her coats as multicolored armor. I saw them as the equivalent of a superhero cape: a transfiguring, protective, emotional armor that encourages and strengthens her as a character. The coat is Midge’s superhero garment. It’s her heroine mantle of hers and it reflects how she presents herself to the world.”
Where were we
In the fourth season we find Midge who, after being fired by Shy Baldwin and losing the opportunity to participate in his tour, takes on new stages to continue chasing her dream. Most notably, she becomes a regular at the Wolford strip club in Manhattan. She has to rebuild her reputation and relaunch her career, but she tries to do it without getting too involved and without leaving her comfort zone, to avoid new disappointments. To shake her, however, comes Lenny Bruce: her colleague scolds her for refusing some jobs, encourages her to stop worrying about failing, pushes her not to waste her talent and start performing on important stages again. In the end, Midge is more motivated than ever to face difficulties and conquer her success: returning home in a blizzard, she stops to look at the Gordon Ford Show billboard. As for the other characters, at the end of the fourth season we left the manager Susie Myerson who, after breaking contact with Sophie Lennon and expanding her agency, is dedicated to her new magician client. Midge’s ex-husband Joel Maisel discovers his new girlfriend Mei Lin is pregnant. Midge’s father, Abe Weissman, takes a job as a theater critic, while her mother Rose starts a dating business and makes enemies of her. Moishe, Joel’s father, recovers from a heart attack.
What we know about the fifth season
The fifth season restarts from the day after the snowstorm. “In the fifth and final season, Midge Maisel is closer than ever to the success she’s always dreamed of, only to find that closer than ever means she’s still a long way off,” reads the official synopsis. Our heroine, inspired by the billboard of The Gordon Ford Show, is ready to get back into the game and fight for fame. She wants to quit her job at Wolford and take on new performances to boost her popularity. Finally, she seems to be really close to her dream, but there will be unexpected events and disappointments. How will she end up?
The cast
Filming for the final season began in New York City in February 2022 and wrapped in early November. In the cast we find all the actors of the past episodes, plus some new entries and guest stars. Rachel Brosnahan plays Midge, Alex Borstein is her agent Susie Myerson, Michael Zegen is ex-husband Joel Maisel, Marin Hinkle is mom Rose Weissman, Tony Shalhoub is father Abraham “Abe” Weissman, Kevin Pollak is ex-father-in-law Moishe Maisel, Caroline Aaron is ex-mother-in-law Shirley Maisel, Luke Kirby is friend and colleague Lenny Bruce. Also reconfirmed Reid Scott, Alfie Fuller and Jason Ralph. There’s also Milo Ventimiglia: he plays the role of the “handsome man” that Midge met at the park in the fourth season and had sex with, before being discovered by a woman who is probably his wife. “We’re going to see a larger, more entertaining second chapter of ‘Milo & Rachel,’” executive producer Daniel Palladino says. He added that we’ll find out his character’s name and we won’t have to keep calling him the “handsome man.” To complete the mini reunion, from A mum for a friend Kelly Bishop also returns: Emily Gilmore’s actress here plays Benedetta, Rose’s rival on the job. Among the new entries, then, there are Peter Friedman, Chloë Kerwin, Austin Basis, Josh Grisetti, Michael Cyril Creighton, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Lucas Kavner. In the list of guest stars, however, Hank Azaria, Sutton Foster, Darren Criss, Danny Strong and Sean Gunn.
There won’t be another season
The fifth season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as mentioned, is also the last. The news, which left fans surprised and saddened, was given by Prime Video in February 2022, the day before the fourth season was released. In an interview, Amy Sherman-Palladino commented: “Many things influenced this decision. Amazon has a big say. From the moment we discovered that the way forward was that, we dedicated a lot of time and attention to closing it on a high note, because the most important thing to me is that Midge gets the send-off and the full treatment she deserves ”. The creator also revealed that she had known for a long time what the scene that would have closed the series would be. “Even before writing the last episode – she said – I knew what the final image was. Some people like to find out where things take them, but I need to know what my endgame is because it helps me go in the right direction. So I knew what the last image was, the image to draw the curtain on. Midge went through a journey: knowing emotionally where I wanted her to end and where I wanted to cut her off, greeting her with a proper ending. All of these characters deserve a proper sendoff.” She also wanted to publicly greet her character Rachel Brosnahan. After filming, she posted a photo on Instagram as Mrs. Maisel and commented: “This series has been a bolt from the blue. A cast, crew and creators who were able to travel through time for five years together. It changed my life. I am eternally grateful.” “Maisel is gone. I told myself I wouldn’t get too attached to it and I wouldn’t fall in love with it. And yet here I am, heartbroken,” Alex Borstein wrote instead.
