The double-decker train traveling from Leiden to The Hague carried about 50 people. It derailed at 3.35 local time (1.35 in Italy) after hitting a crane: the regional disaster cooperation authority announced it, as reported by the national media

A freight train also collided with the crane. The state-owned ProRail company responsible for maintaining the rail network said work was underway on the track on which the passenger train was traveling and that two of the four tracks on that route had been closed to traffic. It is not clear at the moment which platform the freight train was on

The newspaper NRC Handelsblad writes that the freight train is owned by DB Cargo and consisted of 26 cars, nine of which were carrying lime and the rest were empty

The crane involved in the accident belongs to the construction company BAM, a company spokesman confirmed, as reported by the newspaper Het Parool. “But our equipment is never on a track in service,” the spokesman stressed, saying he did not know how the freight train also collided with the crane. “There’s still a lot to investigate”

Broadcast images of the passenger train show a front carriage over a surrounding field, another suspended over a water-filled ditch and a third overturned on its side. A spokesman for the Dutch railways company said a fire had broken out at the rear of the train and was put out during the night.

“We heard a loud bang and suddenly the lights went out,” a witness told local news Omroep West. “Initially we couldn’t get off the train because there was no electricity,” the man explained
