Apparently the filming of House of the Dragon 2, the second season of the HBO television series, will not stop despite the start of the strike that was announced by the American actors union. The cast of the series is in fact composed mainly of English actors, who are working following the directives of the local union, Equity, therefore they can continue with their work legally.
While Equity has argued that it will support SAG-AFTRA and its members in any way, a plaintiff who decides to strike “will have no protection and risk being fired or sued for breach of contract by the producer or his employer. For this reason, if Equity encourages to join the strike or to fail a picket line, Equity itself would be acting illegally and could therefore have to pay damages or be sued”.
The rules of the aforementioned British union will therefore not allow to act actively in solidarity with US colleagues, as has been reported, given that it is based on very specific laws.
The actors’ strike (which comes after the writers’ strike)
After the screenwriters, Hollywood actors are also joining the strike.
They are asking for higher salaries and pensions, protection mechanisms against the unauthorized use of their image through artificial intelligence systems and protection against the exploitation of their works on streaming platforms.
The strike was called by the board of directors of the union that represents them, the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) and follows the failure of negotiations with that of the producers, the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers), which includes Disney, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix, Amazon, Apple and NBCUniversal, among others. The actors’ strike began at midnight on July 13th.
The strike was announced by SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher (the “nanny” Francesca from the sitcom)
The strike announcement was made with a press conference by SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher – best known for her role as nanny Francesca on the sitcom The nanny (who told the producers, “We demand respect, you can’t exist without us”) – and country executive director (also in charge of producer negotiations) Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.
The union represents over 160,000 artists. The last actors’ strike dates back to 1980 and the last time that actors and screenwriters went on strike at the same time was in 1960. On June 30th, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP had decided to extend until July 12th the last contract they had signed in 2020, hoping to find new agreements. But now the deadline has definitely expired and no new contracts have come out. The risk is that the entire film industry will be paralyzed, counting on the fact that the American screenwriters’ strike has continued since May 2nd.
