The death toll from the collapse of a bridge in the Indian state of Gujarat, in the west of the country, is at least 60 dead. This was reported by a local government minister, Brijesh Merja, quoted by the Times of India

Local TV footage shows people hanging from the partially submerged bridge in the Macchu River, in the city of Morbi, with the services involved in rescue operations

At the time of the collapse on the bridge there would have been about 400 people, local television reports Zee newssome of which have fallen into water

The collapse occurred at 6.30 pm local time the day after the reopening of the structure, after six months of closure for repair work

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Gujarat (his native state) for a three-day visit, said he was “deeply saddened by the tragedy”

The suspension bridge over the Macchu River, in the city of Morbi, is 250 meters long and was built in the nineteenth century, at the time of British colonial rule
