Influenza, almost 12.7 million cases since the beginning of the season

The previous high was in the 2017-2018 season, when it reached 8.7 million

The retreat of influenza viruses continues in Italy. In the week from 20 to 26 March the incidence of flu-like syndromes is still slightly decreasing, equal to 5.8 cases per thousand assisted compared to 6.1/thousand of the previous week, and is now placed in the low intensity range . In the last week, 342,000 Italians have fallen ill, for a total of almost 12.7 million infections since the start of surveillance. This was highlighted by the sentinel doctors of the Influnet network, in the latest bulletin released by the Higher Institute of Health. The previous high was in the 2017-2018 season, when it reached 8.7 million.

“Unlike other years, in which the maximum number of cases is usually reached at the end of January, the peak this year was early, before Christmas”, it is highlighted.

The other anomaly was the very slow descent of the curve: “Compared to other seasons in which, after the peak, there is generally a sudden drop in cases, this year the curve is descending very slowly, with real periods of stasis”.
