Iran, 700 prisoners released after victory with Wales at the 2022 World Cup

The victory at the World Cup in last Friday’s match against Wales earned the release of more than 700 prisoners by the Iranian authorities. The judiciary’s website reports, Mizan Online, which explains how 709 prisoners were released from various prisons in the country after the two networks of Cheshmi and Rezaeian. Among them are “some arrested during recent events”, writes the site, in an indirect reference to the demonstrations that have shaken Iran for more than two months and triggered by the death, on September 16, of Mahsa Amini.

About 14 thousand people arrested

According to reports from the official Irna news agency, actress Hengameh Ghaziani was also released on bail, arrested on 20 November for inciting and supporting what the government calls “riots encouraged by Iran’s enemies” and for having communicated with opposition media. The former host of state television, Mahmoud Shahriari, was also released after two months in prison. Tehran’s judiciary said more than 2,000 people had been charged since the protests began. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk around 14,000 people have been arrested.
