Istat, inflation slows down in Italy in February: +9.1%


The national consumer price index for the whole community, gross of tobacco, recorded an increase of 0.2% on a monthly basis and 9.1% on an annual basis, compared to +10.0% in the previous month . The prices of food, home and personal care goods, or the “shopping cart”, show an acceleration in trend terms, going from +12.0% to +12.7%

According to Istat findings, in February 2023 it is estimated that the national consumer price index for the entire community, gross of tobacco, recorded an increase of 0.2% on a monthly basis and 9.1% % on an annual basis, compared to +10.0% the previous month. According to what has emerged, the decrease is explained by the easing of tensions on the prices of energy goods, as well as by the regulated and unregulated component.

For the “shopping cart” in February +12.7%

As Istat explains, the inflation acquired for 2023 is +5.4% for the general index and +3.7% for the core component. The slowdown observed in the month of February is due, in particular, to the accentuation of the decline on a trend basis in the prices of regulated energy goods (from -12.0% to -16.4%) and to the decrease in those of non-regulated energy regulated (+59.3% to +40.8%), the effects of which were partially offset by the acceleration in food prices, both processed and unprocessed, tobacco prices, the prices of recreational and cultural services and for personal care and transportation-related services. Core inflation accelerated from +6.0% to +6.3%, that net of energy goods alone from +6.2% to +6.4%. The prices of food, home and personal care goods, or the “shopping cart”, signal an acceleration in trend terms, going from +12.0% to +12.7%, while those of high frequency of purchases remain substantially stable (from +8.9% to +9.0%). On a trend basis, the division that recorded the greatest increase was that of housing, water, electricity and fuel, with a 24.5% increase in prices.
