Today the test in Lazio and Liguria
IT-alert test today Wednesday 27 September in Lazio and Liguria. Yesterday 26 September it was the turn of Abruzzo and the Autonomous Province of Trento. The tests began in June and will end in October with the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. But what is this new public warning system and how does it work? Is it possible to deactivate it? And if I have airplane mode, will the message still get to me?
For which events is IT-alert used
IT-alert joins the already existing alarm systems also at local level, it is not salvific in itself, but is finalized, with respect to a specific event that has occurred or is imminent – tsunami generated by an earthquake; collapse of a large dam; volcanic activity, relating to the volcanoes Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, Vulcano and Stromboli; nuclear accidents or radiological emergency situation; major accidents in certain establishments; intense rainfall – to allow the rapid dissemination of initial information on possible dangerous situations. The message is received by anyone who is in the area affected by the emergency or disaster and has an active mobile phone.
What do I have to do to receive the IT-alert message
To receive an IT-alert message you do not need to download any app or register online. In some cases, however, a prior check of the device configuration may be necessary, such as if a back up has been restored or if you are using an old version of the operating system.
Can I receive the IT-alert message if I have airplane mode?
To receive an IT-alert message the device must be turned on and have reception. It may not ring if the ringtone is muted.
Does the IT-alert message only arrive on mobile phones?
Depending on the type and implementation, it is possible to receive IT-alerts on the smartwatch, if connected to the main device or if equipped with a micro SIM. The same goes for the tablet. While it is not possible to receive it on PC.
How to disable IT-alert on iPhone and Android
It is possible to deactivate the reception of notifications. With iOS, to not receive notifications on your Apple smartphone, simply go to Settings, Notifications and Disable the IT-Alert function in the ‘Emergency Alerts’ section. For the test phase the situation may be different and it may also be necessary to deactivate the ‘Test alerts’ or ‘Test message’ item.
To deactivate the IT-Alert service on Android, always go to Settings, then to Security and emergency or Password and Security, Public alarms or Emergency alerts. In the ‘Alerts’ section there is IT-Alert, which can be deactivated by removing the flag.
IT-alert and Privacy
IT-alert does not involve any compromise of privacy levels, we read on the site. No personal data of the recipient of the message is processed in any way (collected, archived, consulted, etc.). In fact, IT-alert messages travel through the cell-broadcast system. This technology allows telephone operators to send messages to anyone – without distinction and impersonally – who is near the affected area covered by specific transmission cells of the cellular network of a specific territory, we read further.
The system is one-way (from the telephone operator to the device) and does not allow receiving any type of return data or feedback from the cell phones reached. This means that no personal data of the person receiving the message is processed in any way by the Department of Civil Protection and by the relevant telephone operator.
