Jannik Sinner wins ATP Beijing today, Medvedev beaten in the final

The blue triumphs, the Russian defeated in 2 sets. Third title of the season for the South Tyrolean, who from Monday will be number 4 in the world

Jannik Sinner wins the Beijing 2023 ATP 500 tournament. The 22-year-old Italian, seeded number 6, beat the Russian Daniil Medvedev, number 2 in the draw, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-2) in 2h02′ in the final. The South Tyrolean wins his third title of the season, after those won in the ATP in Montpellier and at the Masters 1000 in Toronto, and the ninth of his career. At the seventh attempt, after 6 defeats in as many matches, he manages to beat Medvedev for the first time.

The match

The first set

The first set is all about balance. The serve dominates the scene in the first 4 games and it proceeds quickly until 2-2. In the fifth game, Sinner saved himself from the break by relying on serve and volley. At 4-3 for the blue, it is Medvedev who takes the risk: the Italian has two break points at his disposal, a cry for revenge because it is wasted with a missed smash. Medvedev thanks, holds serve and stays afloat. The blue maintains solidity on serve, the Russian rarely needs to resort to the second ball: the epilogue to the tie-break is inevitable.

The balance suddenly shifts. The champion from Moscow hurts himself with a double fault and a free error, Sinner (3-0) thanks and escapes with the decisive extension (5-0) to close 7-2.

The second set

The blue could put the arrow in the third game, when he has 2 break points available. Medvedev, who is no longer as impeccable at serve as he was at the start, manages to get out of the quicksand and avoid his rival’s escape. Whoever responds collects the crumbs, the score is reached at 5-5 without any hesitation.

In the eleventh game, at 30-30, Medvedev ‘flirts’ with trouble and has to hold on to the second to avoid granting break points. Sinner, in the last ordinary shift of service, does not tremble: another tie-break. And again a perfect start from the blue, who escapes to 3-0. Medvedev, however, refuses to raise the white flag (3-2). All in vain: Sinner is a steamroller, he flies to 7-2 and closes. The Beijing tournament belongs to him.
