In July 2022, compared to the previous month, both the employed and the unemployed decreased, while the inactive increased. Istat notes this, underlining how the unemployment rate in July 2022 fell by 0.1 points compared to the previous month, reaching 7.9%. Compared to the same month of 2021, the unemployed are down by 1.3%. In numerical terms, the unemployed people are 1 million 978 thousand, a decrease of 32 thousand units on June and 304 thousand on July 2021. On the other hand, the inactive (+ 54 thousand on June) and the inactivity rate (34.4%, +0) increased. , 2 points).

Temporary employees: highest value since 1977

Employees in July 2022 decreased by 22 thousand units compared to June, recording the first decrease since August 2021 and increased by 463 thousand units compared to July 2021. The employment rate drops to 60.3% (-0.1 points). The decline in the number of job seekers (-1.6%, equal to -32 thousand units compared to June) is observed for both genders and mainly between 35-49 year-olds. The unemployment rate drops to 7.9% (-0.1 points) and rises to 24.0% among young people (+0.1 points). The growth in the number of inactive people between 15 and 64 years (+ 0.4%, equal to + 54 thousand units) involves men and women and the age groups under 50. The inactivity rate rises to 34.4% (+0.2 points).

Fewer people are looking for work than in July 2021

Comparing the May 2022-July 2022 quarter with the previous one (February 2022-April 2022), there is an increase in the level of employment equal to 0.6%, for a total of 140 thousand more employees. The number of employees in July 2022 exceeds that of July 2021 by 2.0% (+ 463 thousand units); the increase is transversal by gender and age. The only negative change is recorded between the 35-49 year-olds due to the demographic dynamics; the employment rate, up by 1.6 percentage points, in fact also rises among the 35-49 year-olds (+1.5 points). Compared to July 2021, the number of job seekers decreases (-13.3%, equal to -304 thousand units) and the number of inactive persons aged between 15 and 64 years (-3.3%, equal to -433 thousand) . So few looking for work alone in the lockdown

The unemployed in July decreased by 32 thousand units compared to June, falling to 1 million and 978 thousand.
